When Growth Reveals Your Circle

Recognizing Who Is Truly Rooting for You

I'm constantly on my growth journey, learning, stretching, and becoming more aware of who God created me to be. And with every growth spurt, I've gained a better understanding of the people around me. I've learned that everyone who is present in my life isn't necessarily cheering for my life.

A solid support system is so important, especially when God is calling you into something new. New beginnings can be exciting, but they can also come with fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and questions like,

Can I really do this?
Am I ready?What if I fail?

Those are the moments when you discover the value of having people around you who will remind you of who you are and, more importantly, whose you are.

You need people who will say, "I'm proud of you."

People who will say, "Keep going."

People who will pray for you when you're nervous, encourage you when you're discouraged, and celebrate you when God opens a door.

The Bible reminds us in Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 (NIV):

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up."

There is power in having the right people beside you. I've also learned that genuine support doesn't compete.

Someone who sincerely loves you doesn't have to diminish your accomplishments to feel good about their own. Your growth doesn't threaten them. Your success doesn't offend them. Your answered prayer doesn't make them question their own value.

They understand that what God is doing for you doesn't take anything away from what He can do for them.

Romans 12:15 (NIV) tells us:

"Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn."

That verse has become even more meaningful to me as I've grown. We often focus on having people who will sit with us when we're hurting and that is important. But we also need people who can rejoice with us when we're winning.

Who celebrates when you get the opportunity?

Who gets excited when you tell them your idea?

Who encourages you when you're stepping outside of your comfort zone?

Who reminds you to trust God when fear starts talking louder than your faith?

Who listens to you without making it about themselves?

And who suddenly becomes distant, negative, dismissive, or competitive when things begin going well for you?

Those are important questions.

I believe growth requires discernment because sometimes God is taking us somewhere that everyone in our current circle cannot go.

That doesn't mean we have to become angry, hateful, or arrogant. It doesn't mean everyone we outgrow is a bad person. Sometimes people were right for one season but aren't assigned to the next one. And sometimes growth simply reveals something we couldn't see before.

Proverbs 27:17 (NIV) says:

"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."

The people closest to us should sharpen us not constantly make us question ourselves. They should challenge us in healthy ways, speak truth when necessary, pray for us, encourage our growth, and help point us back to God.

I've reached a place where I understand that access to me should be connected to alignment with where God is taking me.

I don't need a large circle. I need a sincere one.

Give me the people who will pray when I say, "God gave me a vision."

Give me the people who will encourage me when I say, "I'm scared, but I'm going to do it anyway."

Give me the people who can celebrate my blessing without comparing it to theirs.

Give me the people who will lovingly correct me when I'm wrong but won't secretly hope that I fail.

Give me the people who recognize God's hand on my life and aren't intimidated when He causes me to grow.

Give me the people who can support me without guilt when I can't show up for them.

And I want to be that person for others too.

I want to be the friend who claps loudly.

The woman who prays sincerely.

The person who says, "If God called you to it, keep going."

Because someone else's light doesn't dim mine.

Someone else's success doesn't cancel God's plan for me.

There is room for all of us to become who God created us to be.

So today, take a moment and look at your circle.

Who is your cheerleader?

Not the person who tolerates your success. Not the person who supports you only when you're struggling. Not the person who claps publicly but competes with you privately.

Who is sincerely rooting for you?

And just as importantly whose cheerleader are you?

As God continues to elevate, stretch, heal, and grow you, ask Him for discernment concerning the people who are walking beside you. Some relationships will deepen. Some will change. And some you may have to lovingly release.

Don't be afraid of that.

You aren't required to carry everyone into every season.

Jesus Himself had crowds around Him, twelve disciples who walked closely with Him, and an even smaller inner circle. Everybody did not have the same level of access.

Neither should they in our lives.

Choose people who can pray with you, grow with you, correct you, encourage you, and genuinely celebrate what God is doing in your life.

And when God shows you who is truly for you, cherish them. Don't be afraid to lose those not assigned to your growth journey.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for every person You have placed in my life who has sincerely prayed for me, encouraged me, supported me, and celebrated what You are doing in my life. Help me never take those relationships for granted.

Lord, give me discernment concerning my circle. Show me who is assigned to this season of my life and give me the wisdom to recognize when a relationship has completed its purpose. Help me release people without anger, bitterness, or resentment when You are calling me forward.

Surround me with people who love You, speak truth, encourage growth, pray sincerely, and aren't threatened by the blessings You have placed on my life.

And Father, make me that kind of person for someone else. Remove jealousy, comparison, competition, and insecurity from my heart. Teach me to celebrate others wholeheartedly, pray for their success, encourage their dreams, and rejoice when I see Your hand moving in their lives.

As I continue on this God ordained journey, give me the courage to keep growing, even when growth changes my circle. Remind me that I never have to fear losing what You didn't assign to where You're taking me.

In Jesus' mighty name I pray,
Amen.
