Who Am I to Be Here?
Overcoming Imposter Syndrome Through Faith
Have you ever walked into a room you prayed to enter and suddenly wondered if you belonged there?
You received the opportunity, accepted the position, stepped into leadership, started the ministry, or finally watched the door you prayed for open and then a little voice whispered, “Who am I to be here? Am I really qualified for this?”
That feeling is often called imposter syndrome, and I have experienced it.
There have been moments when God opened doors for me that I prayed for, prepared for, and worked hard for, yet once I walked through them, I questioned whether I belonged on the other side. I would look around and see people who seemed more experienced, more knowledgeable, or more confident and begin focusing on what I thought I lacked instead of remembering everything God had already placed inside of me.
But God has been teaching me something important. Feeling unqualified does not mean I am uncalled.
Moses had his own “Who am I?” moment when God called him.
“But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?’ And God said, ‘I will be with you." Exodus 3:11–12
I love God's response. He didn't give Moses a list of reasons why he was qualified. He simply said, “I will be with you.”
Maybe that's the answer when I find myself asking, “Who am I to be here?”
I am the person God allowed to be here, and He is with me.
I've also had to accept that being called doesn't mean I will know everything. Sometimes God prepares us while we're walking. There are things I know today because I once entered situations where I didn't know what to do. I learned. I grew. I asked questions. I sought wisdom. And God met me there.
I've learned to stop interpreting “I don't know this yet” as “I don't belong here.”
Those are two completely different things.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5–6.
Comparison can also make that feeling of being an imposter louder. We look at someone else's education, experience, confidence, accomplishments, or success and suddenly decide that what God placed inside of us isn't enough.
But God didn't call me to be someone else. He called me to be faithful with what He gave me.
When I look back over my life, I can see that God was preparing me even when I didn't realize it. Difficult seasons taught me something. Closed doors taught me something. Starting over taught me something. Even experiences I would never choose to repeat gave me wisdom I carry today.
I didn't arrive here empty-handed. I brought every lesson God taught me along the way.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
I don't have to pretend I know everything. I don't have to fake confidence. I don't have to become someone else to prove that I deserve to be in a space God has opened for me.
I've come to understand that I can be humble without being insecure. There is a difference between humility and insecurity. Humility says, “God, I can't do this without You." Insecurity says, “God can't possibly use someone like me.”
I'm learning to choose the first.
“For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
So, when that voice asks, “Who do you think you are?” I can remind myself that I am God's handiwork. I am still learning. I am still growing. I don't know everything, and I don't have to.
Maybe imposter syndrome won't disappear before I walk into the next room but I'll walk in anyway.
I'll ask questions. I'll learn what I don't know. I'll develop my gifts. I'll make mistakes and grow from them. Most importantly, I'll stop disqualifying myself from places where God has already made room for me.
The next time I find myself asking, “Who am I to be here?” I'll remember that I don't have to be perfect to be called. I don't have to know everything to belong.
If God opened the door, I can trust Him to equip me once I walk through it.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for every door You have opened and every season You have used to prepare me. When insecurity makes me question whether I belong, remind me that my confidence is not found in knowing everything it is found in knowing You.
Help me stop comparing my journey to others and recognize the gifts, experiences, wisdom, and purpose You have placed inside of me. Give me humility to ask questions, courage to keep learning, and faith to walk into unfamiliar spaces knowing You are with me.
I surrender my fear of not being enough. I will not shrink because I feel intimidated, disqualify myself because I am still learning, or allow fear to make decisions that faith should be making.
When I ask, “Who am I to be here?” remind me that if You opened the door, I can trust You to help me walk through it.
I belong wherever You have assigned me to be.
It's in the mighty name of Jesus I pray,
Amen.
