Every Season Has a Purpose

I grew up on an island where almost every day was warm. Sunshine and heat were normal to me. So imagine being a child moving to the United States in the middle of winter and seeing all this white stuff falling from the sky!

I had never experienced cold like that before. There were too many layers of clothes, gray skies, bare trees, and everything seemed cold, dull, and lifeless. I was miserable, I didn't think I could take another snow day.

Then spring came. Suddenly, the world I thought looked dead began to change. Flowers started blooming. Trees that had been bare began growing leaves again. Color returned. Life returned. From then on, spring became my favorite season.

As I've gotten older, I've realized there was a lesson in those trees that I couldn't understand as a child. They were never dead — they were dormant.

Winter did not destroy their purpose. The cold did not cancel what God had created them to do. Beneath what looked lifeless, something was still happening. Their roots were still there. Life was still there. And when the season changed, what had been hidden began to bloom again.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” (NLT)

I've had some winter seasons in my own life; times when things felt cold, uncertain, and even lifeless. Seasons when I couldn't see growth and wondered what God was doing. But looking back, I realize that just because I couldn't see anything happening didn't mean God wasn't working.

Sometimes God does some of His greatest work in us when everything appears dormant.

Right now, we're in fall. Pumpkin everything is everywhere, the leaves are changing colors, and soon those beautiful leaves will fall. Yet I'm already thinking about spring because I know what comes after winter. Things bloom again.

Lately, I've realized that although the calendar says fall, spiritually and personally, I feel like I'm in my spring season.

God is growing me in so many areas of my life. Things He planted in earlier seasons are beginning to come alive. My faith is growing. My purpose is becoming clearer. I'm growing personally, spiritually, and in the calling God has placed on my life.

Isaiah 43:19 says, “For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?” (NLT)

I can finally say, “Yes, Lord, I see it!”

I see the new growth. I see the places where God has healed what winter wounded. I see things blooming that I once thought were dead. I see prayers beginning to take shape. I see purpose emerging from places that once felt painful and empty.

Maybe that's the reminder someone needs today. Don't judge your purpose by the season you're currently standing in.

A bare tree still has purpose. A dormant seed still has potential. And a difficult season does not mean your story is over.

There is beauty in blooming, but there is also purpose in being still. Sometimes God allows us to go through dormant seasons because He's strengthening our roots for what we're going to carry when it's time to bloom.

So I'm grateful for every season I've survived. I'm grateful for the winters that taught me endurance. I'm grateful for the seasons when God was strengthening my roots even though I couldn't see the evidence.

And I'm grateful that today I can look at my life and say I'm in my spring season.

I'm growing. I'm healing. I'm becoming. I'm walking more confidently in my purpose. And I'm watching God bring life to things He planted in me a long time ago.

I don't know what everything will look like when it's in full bloom, but I trust the One who planted it.

And I'm ready to see what grows!

Prayer

Father God, thank You for being Lord over every season of my life. Thank You for reminding me that even when I cannot see growth, You are still working beneath the surface.

Thank You for every winter You carried me through, every root You strengthened, every lesson You taught me, and everything You were preparing me for when I thought nothing was happening.

As I walk into this spring season of my life, help me embrace the growth You are bringing. Let me bloom according to Your timing and not my own. Give me the courage to walk fully in my purpose and the wisdom to recognize Your hand in every area of my life.

And Lord, for the person who is still in their winter season, remind them that dormant does not mean dead. Remind them that You have not forgotten them. Strengthen their roots, renew their hope, and give them faith to believe that their spring will come.

May everything that blooms in our lives point back to You.

In Jesus' name I pray,
Amen.
