When Healing Changes Your Perspective

Have you ever looked back over your life and wondered, "What was so broken in me that made me choose this person or this path?"

If you have, don't be discouraged. That question may actually be evidence that God is healing you.

Reflection isn't about living in regret. It's about allowing God to reveal the places in your heart that once influenced your decisions. When we're carrying unhealed wounds, rejection, abandonment, fear, insecurity, or loneliness, those wounds often become the lens through which we view the world. Instead of making decisions from a place of peace, we make them from a place of pain.

Brokenness has a way of convincing us that potential is the same as purpose. It causes us to overlook warning signs because we're focused on what someone could become instead of who they are. It whispers that if we work harder, love deeper, sacrifice more, or stay a little longer, things will finally change.

But God never intended for His children to live from a place of brokenness.

I know this because I've lived it.

I've made decisions that were completely contrary to what my discernment was telling me. I accepted relationships, responsibilities, and opportunities that eventually drained me emotionally, increased my anxiety, and slowly pulled me out of alignment with God's will for my life.

Looking back now, I realize something that was difficult to admit at the time, had I already been healed in those particular areas of my heart, I would have seen those situations differently.

Healing changes your perspective

When God heals your heart, you stop confusing chaos with excitement. You stop mistaking attention for love. You stop believing that carrying everyone's burdens is your assignment. You begin choosing peace over pressure, wisdom over emotion, and obedience over desperation.

One of the greatest gifts of spiritual maturity is realizing that discernment was never absent, our pain was simply louder than God's whisper.

The beautiful part is that God doesn't shame us for the decisions we made while we were broken. Instead, He lovingly invites us into restoration.

God Restores What Brokenness Distorts

God specializes in restoring what pain has distorted.

He heals our identity so we no longer seek validation from people.

He heals our fears so we no longer settle for less than His best.

He heals our hearts so we can recognize His voice with greater clarity.

Reflection is not punishment.

Reflection is preparation.

Sometimes God allows us to look back, not so we remain there, but so we can clearly see how far His grace has brought us.

Your past is not your prison. It is evidence of God's faithfulness.

Perhaps today God is inviting you to stop asking, "Why did I choose that?" and begin asking, "Lord, what are You healing in me so I never have to make that choice again?"

That question leads to freedom. God examines and heals our hearts

Psalm 139:23–24 (NIV) says, "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

When we invite God to search our hearts, He reveals not only our actions but also the wounds behind them. His desire is never to condemn us but to lead us into healing and truth.

Trust God's direction instead of your own understanding. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)

Pain often clouds our judgment, but when we trust God's wisdom above our own emotions, He faithfully directs our steps.

God transforms the way we think. "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is His good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Healing isn't just emotional it is spiritual. As God renews our minds, He changes the way we see ourselves, others, and the decisions we make.

God promises wisdom to those who ask, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." James 1:5 (NIV)

God never condemns us for needing wisdom. He invites us to ask, and He gives it generously.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving me enough to heal the places I tried to hide. Thank You for Your grace that never abandoned me, even when I made choices outside of Your perfect will.

Lord, search my heart. Reveal every wound, every fear, every insecurity, and every lie that has influenced my decisions. Heal the broken places that caused me to settle, strive, or move ahead of You.

Teach me to recognize Your voice above my emotions. Strengthen my discernment so that I choose what You have ordained instead of what my fears desire. Help me to trust Your timing, Your purpose, and Your plan for my life.

Renew my mind, restore my heart, and align every step I take with Your will. Let my past become a testimony of Your mercy instead of a source of shame. May every lesson lead me closer to You and prepare me for the life You have called me to live.

Thank You for being a God of restoration, redemption, and new beginnings. I choose today to move forward with peace, confidence, and complete trust in You.
